10/11/13 The Case of the Overcommitted Freshman

The Case of the Overcommitted Freshman

Gabrilla is a new student and wants college to be everything it could possibly be . Her father told her about the importance of gaining good leadership experience in college, and Gabrilla wants her resume to be as strong as possible when she graduates . She believes that to succeed in the world, she has to be aggressive and really strive to be involved .

During fall semester, she joined student government, got a 10-hour work-study job for the VP of Student Development, accepted a position as a writer for the school paper and met a boy that she was very interested in dating . She took 18 hours in the fall and did pretty well (B average) in all of her classes . She was chosen to be the captain of her building's intramural team because of her charisma and ability to be responsible for organizing the team's practice schedule every week .

You have noticed that all of the strain from her activities is beginning to wear her down, now that the spring semester has started . She is frequently ill, has started sleeping through her morning class, is getting pretty strict with the girls for missing their floor's IM practices, and has started turning papers in late because she doesn't have enough time to finish them .

When you suggest that she cut back on some of her activities and try to get more rest, Gabrilla tells you that she was just invited to speak at a campus rally in a few weeks . New students don't usually get chosen for something like this, and she's honored that all of her efforts to excel as a leader are beginning to pay off .This is the type of thing that could really fill out her resume and look great to potential employers . Her dad is always telling her to build her resume and this would be a great opportunity to do just that .

Does Gabrilla have realistic expectations about how much she can handle?

What would you do if you were a leader on Gabrilla's floor?

9/20/13 Smokes All Around

Janice is a high school junior that is highly involved in many activities within her school.  She participates in choir, jazz choir, band, speech, and one-act play.  She is also a member of the National Honor Society and an officer in the local Future Business Leaders of America organization.

Among all of her activities, Janice still has time in her schedule for a part-time job.  She works at a local convenience store which sells a little bit of everything.  The store sells a limited supply of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products as well as grocery items and small home improvement products.

Janice's work requirements include helping to unload delivery trucks, stock shelves, record inventory and work the cash register. The community that Janice lives and works in is a rather small community and Janice knows many of the patrons that visit the store.  Some of them are friends with her parents, others are family friends and some are even her teachers and classmates at school.

One high school acquaintance that Janice sees frequently come through the store is a senior boy named Keith.  Janice knows that Keith is 18 and he often comes in and buys a couple items along with a pack or two of cigarettes.  Since Keith is 18, it is legal for him to purchase tobacco products.

Janice and her friends were hanging out one night after a football game and happened to be in the same place as Keith and some of his friends.  The two groups hung out together for a while until Keith got a text message from one of his friends and said he had to leave to go and buy some cigarettes for his buddy that was not 18 yet.

From that point on, when Janice is working and Keith comes in and purchases cigarettes, she has a feeling that he is buying them for someone else that s underage.

PLEASE RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS USING COMPLETE SENTENCES

Should Janice say something to Keith when he purchases the cigarettes?

Should Janice tell her boss?  Should she tell someone else?

What other steps could Janice take in this situation?

9/13/13 The Case of the Inconsistent RA Staff

The Case of the Inconsistent RA Staff

You've had a great time as an RA this year and you are so thankful that you were selected for the position . One of the biggest lessons that you've learned this year involves the importance of tough love . You've had some difficult students and have seen how important it is to love them, but hold them accountable as well . You've noticed that this has actually led to them respecting you a bit more than they probably would have, if you had just let things slide .

The toughest rule you've had to enforce has turned out to be charging students a dollar when they get locked out of their rooms . While you think it's a dumb rule, you understand its importance in teaching people to be more responsible . You have set aside your personal opinion on the matter for the sake of the team and for the sake of listening to your supervisor . You're actually glad in some ways because Chuck always forgets his keys and really needs to learn this particular lesson .

One day, you see Chuck walking down the hall with another RA ( John) from the floor below you, who then proceeds to let Chuck into his room . Once John leaves, you ask Chuck why he called John when you were already here and on the floor . He tells you that he's tired of paying you a dollar when he gets locked out of his room and that John is cool about extending grace instead of enforcing rules . He then says that he wished every RA would just relax like John does, and says he's going to try and switch rooms at the end of the semester .

> What would you do?
> How would this affect your relationship with Chuck?
> What would you say to both Chuck and John, if anything?

The Case of the Rotten Meat
Almost two weeks ago you asked Jose (one of your Resident Assistants) for his help in evacuating the Residence Hall after the city lost power from a Hurricane . Most of the residents were already on fall break so “evacuating” mostly turned out to be making sure no one was still in their rooms . Unbeknownst to you, Jose took it upon himself to collect any of the steaks that had been left in a student’s freezer . He then invited anyone in the area to come over to his friend’s house for a “Hurrication” BBQ party .
You heard about the party a few days ago when a student complained to you about Jose stealing their steaks . You asked what they meant and they told you about the party that Jose hosted with the steaks from their freezer . When you asked Jose about it, he said he didn’t want the meat to be wasted . He didn’t think it was that big of a deal because the meat was going to go bad anyway .
> Did Jose steal the steaks?
> How would you handle this situation with Jose?
> Would you handle the situation differently if it wasn’t a student leader who “stole” the steaks?
