The Case of the National Spotlight
Your men's soccer team has had quite a season . While they came into the season ranked #9 nationally, they won some close games and moved up to #2 with only one loss on the season . Going into the last weekend, four days before they were supposed to leave for the national tournament, a lot of the team decided to go to a party . The party was at an off-campus house and the hosts made sure that alcohol was in no short supply .Things quickly got out of hand and in the end, the police were called to break up the party .
Details are pretty fuzzy, but in the end, 43 students were cited for underage drinking, nine students went to the hospital because of alcohol poisoning, and one student died from injuries sustained while falling off of a balcony . He was too drunk to catch his balance once he started to fall .
When interviewed by the media, the soccer coach insisted that his players who were there are good boys that made a bad choice . When asked if he would cancel the trip to the National tournament, the coach responded by saying, "Are you crazy? We earned that trip and we're not gonna let this stop us from our goals ." While the coach would later admit the timing of the statement was unfortunate, his comments have nonetheless led to a media frenzy focused on entitled student athletes who are "Above the Law ."
The Board of Trustees has convened an emergency meeting to discuss what should be done because this is the fourth major house party of the fall where the police needed to be called . At the time of the meeting, the team was only a day away from leaving for the tournament and it still wasn't clear how many soccer players were involved and to what extent they were involved with the party . The Board has asked you to give them a recommendation of what should be done .
> If you were President, what would you say should be done?
Well even though I would love to say go and win this to prove yourself. That is wrong and if they are good guys that had a bad idea I think we need to teach them a lesson of responsibility and not let them go. If they are that good then they can play next year and win with a backbone of responsibility. I understand that they are celebrating and excited but in football if you over celebrate a touchdown...oops? Yeah no that is not that way it works in this world.
ReplyDeleteI feel that they should cancel the trip is most of them were involved. They need to learn from their mistakes and next year hopefully they will get really far. Also the police had to to go a lot more parties and break them up, so this one wasn't the first. If I were the coach I would cancel the trip and explain to the players why I did so. And they would have to learn from their mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI think they should still be able to go to the national tournament. They earned their way to the tournament. Their coach is right. Yes it is bad that they did it, but they still deserve to go to the tournament. It is unfortunate that they had the party so close to the tournament, but they should still go.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that they should be taken away from the opportunity of going to the tournament. Yeah, they made a mistake, a bad mistake, but they did work REALLY hard to get that far. They should be punished in a different way, though. If I was the coach. I'd make them run more than they could imagine....but also with some privileges taken away. I also think that if the hosts were a part of the team that they should be suspended from the team. Underaged drinking is dangerous, especially when there is the chance of hurting yourself. It's also ridiculous that they took it that far when they knew that they could jeopardize their ability to play in the game. I'd tell them that if they throw another party they will be suspended from the team.
ReplyDeleteI think that people are only human and will make mistakes that they will later learn from later in life. I don't think that this frenzy from the media should cause the team to loose their chance at nationals. They worked hard throughout the season and earned this and taking this from them would be bad. Later in life they will look back on their mistakes and realize that they made some bad mistakes but will admit that they learned and regret going to the party.
ReplyDeleteI feel that all players that were at the party and was caught by multiple people doing anything illegal should not be allowed play in the game. If this means that you have to go with the 3 stringers then so be it the team members should have thought about the consequences before they went the party. If they get humiliated they deserve it because they didn’t care about the team enough to behave. I get that they wanted to celebrate but they could have waited until after the game and made better choices.

ReplyDeleteI think that if the players are truly good boys then they should be able to play in the game but they need to also be punished because they knew what was at hand and they chose to go to the party instead of staying home and getting rest for the big game. They should be more cautious and careful next time before they choose to do something as stupid as this.
