5/13/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Recall or Regret?

Darius is a quality assurance supervisor for an auto parts manufacturer.  He discovers a flaw in a part used in diesel engines.  He believes the flaw may not necessarily be dangerous, and he knows is could require several months of testing and re-engineering to fix.  

The factory has already produced and shipped 5,000 of these parts.  Darius knows the company is in financial trouble and would be devastated if they were required to recall the parts.  A recall now could also result in the layoff of hundreds of workers.  However, its his job to ensure the parts are perfect and he can't stop thinking about it.  Even though he thinks the defect is harmless, what if it isn't?  What should Darius do?

  1. I would say that they aren't in the best shape because it isn't your fault that they don't work you are just supposed to say if they work well or not and they don't. I would tell his boss that it doesn't work properly because its better than risking it and him finding out and you getting fired.

  2. I would tell the company owners and they can deal with it their own and make their own decision about it. But I would say something because you could get fired for not telling because they could think that you didn't know.

I would tell the company because either way when the buyers find out the product is defective the company will be in a way worse situation and if he does tell the company he might get a promotion if the company doesnt go out of business. He is supposed to be doing his job and if he doesnt say he found a defect someone else will and he will get fired.

  4. i would tell the person who owns the business and they can deal with it. its the companies job to decide everything that goes on not you.

  5. I would report the defect. Even though he thinks it won't harm anything or anyone you never know what could happen.It's better to be safe than sorry. If someone ends up getting hurt and you didn't report it you would feel bad and probably lose your job anyway. The company could get sued and that would end badly.

  6. He should probably tell the owner or someone higher up than him in the business. Its not really his responsibility. He just needs to tell someone.

  7. I would send letters to the different areas where the parts were shipped with letters for every part that explains that it will not harm the vehicle in any way and so on. That would give me some comfort at night and it doesn't make the business go bankrupt. I see this as a win, win situation.

  8. I would say ship them off if it lasts for the first 6 months maybe the flaw is not going to affect the engine but if it does not work when they ship it back. If a supervisor asks did you see a flaw in this you would say no because laying off hundreds of people is not a good thing.

  9. If i was him i would get it fixed and play it safe it may take a little longer but its safer and if its dangerous then someone could get hurt and they would get sued sooo they best just fix it now

  10. I would tell the person that is in charge and so that they can make the call. I would tell them everything that I know about the possible dangers so that they are as well informed and they can be to my knowledge. I would tell that they should stop shipping them until the matter gets resolved so that they don’t have to recall more than they have to if they need to in the first place.

  11. I would probably tell the owner or someone higher up. I don't think it is his responsibility but he should tell somone. Thats the best thing for everyone.

  12. If I were darius I wouldn't take the risk of those parts not being harmless. I would go to my boss and say, "Hey I found a defect in the engine part we just shipped out." Also the part about laying off hundreds of workers. That wouldn't be your fault entirely because you just found the defect. Risk the layoff of hundreds of workers or risk the lives of thousands of people even if you think the part is harmless. Better safe than sorry.
