5/6/15 Wednesday Case Study (50 word min)

CJ is a data analyst for a major casino and has to work after normal business hours to finish an important project.  He realizes he is missing data that was sent to his coworker Dane.  Recently, CJ noticed Dane typing his password and learned what it is.  He decides to log into Dane's computer and resend the data to himself.

Upon doing so, CJ sees an open e-mail to a local sports book regarding gambling bets Dane placed over the last several days.  CJ knows all casino employees are forbidden to engage in gambling activities to avoid any hint of conflict of interest.  He knows he should report this but would have to admit to violating the company's information technology regulations by logging into Dane's computer.  If he warns Dane to stop his betting, he would also have to reveal the source of his information.  Dane would know he used his password.  What does CJ do in this situation?

  1. I think CJ should go talk to Dane about his problem and how he should try and fix it. But that also means that CJ would have to admit to Dane that he knows his password. I think that if he tell him why he go onto his computer in the first place that if Dane was his freind that he would understand. Dane can change the password and everyone can move on with there life.

  2. Well if Dane is a cool dude I would tell him I had to resend something and just warn him you saw the email. If I were CJ I would think Dane would thank him because it could get him in trouble. If Dane doesn't cooperate then I would tell the boss because he shouldn't be gambling in the first place.

  3. This is a hard one. I would probably bring something up to the administration and say like he heard him on the phone talking bout gambling or something like that. Also I wouldn't get on anyone's computer again and leave them alone.

  4. I think he should address all workers that gambling for them is against the rules. That way it's not so obvious that he was violating his privacy. He shouldn't have even done that in the first place. He could've just asked him to resend it to him.

  5. I wouldn't tell the administration because he shouldn't have even gone onto his co-worker's computer. I feel CJ shouldn't say anything to anyone because he might be already dealing with the situation. I would only talk about it if Dane asked about it. It would have been so much easier to tell Dane about the information that needed to be sent. If CJ personally sees Dane gambling then he should talk to him, but it was invading his personal space. I guess if you suspect he is gambling a lot more then a private conversation with Dane would be in order.

  6. I think CJ should log out of Dane's computer and the next day go find Dane and ask him to send the files to you and follow him to his computer to make sure that he sends them and when CJ notices that Dane has been gambling when he wasn't supposed to. Then you can go to your supervisor and tell him. That way he never have to worry about you knowing his password.

  7. I think CJ needs to talk to Dane as soon as possible. This can be a very big deal and shouldn't be taken lightly. CJ needs to explain to Dane why he was in his computer and most definitely apologize. After, I would look at the situation again and go from there. It really depends on how Dane acts/acted.

  9. If i were CJ i would let it slide to keep himself from getting in trouble. I would wait till the moment that his coworker brings something up relating and gets himself in trouble because sooner or later he will get caught if he is betting money for something he works for. He will get caught sooner or later so i would wait till a different time when the answere starts to become obvious then tell someone else about it and have them confront him and ask to check his email.

  10. If I were CJ I would remind all employes that they can't be gambling. I would try to keep any hints of seeing the email to myself because I don't want to be punished. I would talk to Dane and tell him that I resent some data to myself using his computer. I would keep out the fact that I was looking through his emails.
