I think this means that you should try knew things and put yourself out there. It does teach you things but it can also be bad because bad things might happen. If they do try to fix it and move on.
I really don't get the quote but I would say that you need to try to learn things by yourself and not have to count on other people to teach you or walk you through everything. When you get older you will not have someone holding your hand through decisions.
It's kind of like the saying that you learn something and then you take a test in school while you take a test and then learn something in life. I think this is saying learning before you do something is better. I actually think they're both equal.
I think that this is saying that with something you have to try to do it yourself and keep trying till you get it right because sometimes no one can teach you but yourself.
