The Right to Know
June is a 23 year old newspaper reporter who reports on crime in Atlanta. On her way to work one day, she recognized several police officers hanging around her neighborhood. She had interviewed some of them before and figured that, because they weren't in uniform, they must be on an undercover operation. She called Karen, her source in the police department, who told her that a serial rapist had been striking in that neighborhood and there had already been five victims. Karen also told her that if she reported on the sting, the rapist could be tipped off and skip town. He might go to another city and attack more women.
June knows that if she reported the sting, no cop in the city would ever speak to her again. But she also knows that women in her community are in imminent danger and feels that someone has to warn them. What should June do?
If i were her i would not put it in the newspaper i would just tell everyone about it. Like put it on social media or something that way its less likely for cops to be mad at her since shes not puting it in the newspaper. It is a tough situation but i would just leave it out of the news paper and share it on other things.
ReplyDeleteI would honestly leave it alone for a couple of weeks. The cops are on the job and trying. I'm sure the woman in the neighborhood have heard about it and have been aware of their surroundings. But putting it in the newspaper will make the guy run to another town where the woman and the cops are not ready or prepared enough to know what is going on.
ReplyDeleteIf I was in her situation I wouldn't worry to much about it because the cops are already looking out for him so why try and do there job. Most of the people in the community have already heard about it so they are aware of what could happen if they aren't paying attention. Putting it in the newspaper was a bad idea because then he could see and run to a different town without anyone noticing.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't write about it because the cops are already working on the case and if the guy sees the paper he could make a run for it then you have a harder time finding him. I think that if she wants to protect the women in her neighborhood she should leave it alone and let the police handle it. By putting this in the newspaper she could make the situation 10x worse.
ReplyDeleteI would leave the case alone until after they caught the rapist. That way it is still known but doesn't interfere with the cops investigation/ undercover mission. I am sure the women of the town would like to know but the cops are already on it. If something bad goes wrong more news for you and after you can write about how to protect yourself if it shall ever happen to you.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she should report on it. It would put people in other communities in danger. However I think that police should contact people in other towns to warn them about what is going on. But putting it in the newspaper would be a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she should put it in the newspaper because then he would definitely leave. If I were her I would talk to some of my friends around the neighborhood and say that there have been robberies around town so they should lock their door and make sure that they are prepared if someone mysterious is walking up to them. This way you don't have to directly say what is going on, but you can warn them.
ReplyDeleteIf I were June I would do a story that reminded everyone that there are dangers in the city and that they should always be aware of them. The story would just go over that people who do get attacked should do so that they can defend themselves. I would not say anything about the man attacking the women but I would use an example. I would say that women should be careful at night because they look like easy prey for criminal of all kinds. The story would still be on crime but it would never use the criminal or a case that is similar to it as to not tip him off.
